Re: California Environmental Quality Act

(Today's Date), 2005

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

As a resident of California, I strongly urge you to take a stand against legislation to weaken the California Environmental Quality Act, a powerful tool used by Californians to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink and the natural beauty we love.

The Act creates a highly effective public participation process by giving ordinary people the tools to effectively plan for our futures. This law has protected Californians from numerous development projects that would have increased air and water pollution, contaminated our soil and wetlands, destroyed wildlife areas and beaches, and increased commute times. It has demanded that all parties involved in the growth of this great state do their fair share to protect our natural resources.

The Environmental Quality Act is a law that works. Yet, this legislative year there are already 40 bills introduced to modify it. Still, the California Supreme Court has consistently pointed out that the law "protects not only the environment but also informed self-government."

Please take a strong stance in defense of the state's most important environmental and public health protection.

Sincerely,
